Victims of Crimes

Several Federal laws provide for the issuance of 10,000 U visas per year to victims of crimes who have suffered substantial physical of mental abuse as a result of having been the victim of "qualifying criminal activity" and the victim has been helpful to law enforcement agents in the investigation or the prosecution of the crime. An I-918 petition is filed with USCIS to establish eligibility as a crime victim. After the U status has been granted the person can file for permanent residence after having resided in the United States for four years in U status.
